On Thursday 29th July, the band convened again in Putney, South-West London to give a 35-minute performance of tracks from “Sweetener” and “Overspill” at The Half Moon (we went on late but finished on time……..aaargh). We got to the venue and found that I was billed as “James Kelly”………….briefly toyed with the idea of whipping out a black marker and correcting it, except there were too many bloody posters scattered round the place, so sat down and cleaned me glasses instead. We went on first, after a soundcheck where – at one rarefied stage – we rivalled Motorhead for volume, but thankfully managed to persuade the engineer to knock everything down a notch. First song was a partial nightmare for me. Upon finishing a noisy lead break, I stepped on the wrong footswitch of my effects pedal and the thing just started blinking at me, instead of going back to the first sound I had. The guitar just kept squealing. Sorted it out by turning the guitar down completely and, once my vocal was over, bending down and switching the unit off and on again – all part of the act, everyone…………We had a new bass player for the evening, Pete Randall (a mate of George, our keyboard player), who did very well with some tricky arrangements. The rest of the performance was pretty good, although we need tightening up in certain songs (this will come). I have to say a very large “thank you” to all the people who specifically came to see me – we had a great turnout and hope this may go some way to getting a repeat booking. My favourite song of the evening was probably our final one, “I’d Be All Over That”, run a close second by “Sour Faced Woman”. While I think on, my apologies to anyone who noticed we didn’t do “Overspill” or “Freak Summer”……….next time, we’ll leather them good and proper, I promise.
